The office is supporting the work of Hartley Valley Holiday Farm who announced on Tuesday that its premises would be acting as a drop-off point for donated groceries, vouchers and stock feed.
Administration assistant Madison Edwards has volunteered to drive the goods to Bathurst on a monthly basis, which will then be distributed to farmers throughout NSW by charity ‘Aussie Helpers’.
The Lithgow Mercury will be accepting goods to be taken on Ms Edward’s run.
“I think it’s of huge importance to Australia that we do support our farmers because they are the heart of Australia, really,” Ms Edwards said.
Ms Edwards first run to Bathurst is on Saturday, August 4.
“As long as there are farmers in need and they need help we will keep doing it.”
She said the holiday farm had not been impacted by the big dry, but the farmer supplying the hay for the property’s 60 horses was “just scraping through”.
“Where we get our hay, the farmer lives in Mudgee, he’s just scraping through,” she said.
“There’s so many hay business out there struggling to get product out to their suppliers, so you can just imagine how the live stock is suffering as well as the farmers.”
Ms Edwards said that she’d been told farmers in particular need dog food. The farm is also taking grocery and fuel vouchers, non-perishable food items, bottled water, horse feed and hay, and sanitary items.
The Lithgow Mercury office will be accepting these items, to be left at the office during business hours.
