The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) celebrated its fifth birthday on July 1, as it continues to improve the lives of people with disability across the country.
More than 160,000 Australians are now accessing the NDIS and, since 2013 when four trial sites were launched, 45,000 people are receiving support for the very first time and 14,271 service providers have registered.
These thousands of service providers are working with people with disability to ensure they are best equipped to live fulfilling lives.
Jenni Wilson from Lithgow Information and Neighbourhood Centre (LINC) believes it is vital that communities across the country are inclusive.
“It is important that people are not treated differently,” she said. “All people should be treated equally and have the same opportunities which many people take for granted.
“It is all about getting people back into their community, helping them be active members of their community. At Lithgow Information and Neighbourhood Centre we try to make a difference for people, for how they want their NDIS plan to work out. That means making it as individual and flexible as possible.”
Ms Wilson has spent almost two decades working with LINC to offer various assisted living options and supports to eligible people in the community who have an intellectual/developmental, physical and/or psychiatric disability.
A person-centre organisation, LINC provides a range of services to the community:
- Child services, offering respite and social and recreational options
- Assisted living options, group home living.
- Respite services.
- Social and recreational activities for individuals.
- Linking You Socially program, providing group social outings.
- Domestic assistant and lawn and yard assistance.
- Financial intermediary for those with an NDIS plan.
- Neutral support coordination for those with a complex NDIS plan.
