Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said the icy weekend temperatures easily surpassed the weather station’s former record of -7.7 degrees from May 2016.
“That particular site has only been going for ten years, and ten years is not a particularly long time to compare things, but that’s the coldest morning that has been recorded in the decade,” she said.
Sunday temperatures at Mt Boyce weather station, which has been for the past 26 years, missed breaking the minimum record by less than a degree.
“On Sunday it recorded -2.6 degrees, and the coldest it’s been is -3.4 degrees in 1990, so nearish,” Ms Westcott said.
She said morning temperatures would rise.
“Wednesday and Thursday will probably be around the two degree mark in the morning, for tough Lithgow people that’s probably pretty warm.
“Daytime temperatures, you’re looking at 13 degrees on Wednesday, and 15 degrees on Thursday.”
Ms Westcott explained that a cold front moving through the state brought significant lows to most areas.
“To get the low temperatures you need clear skies and light winds,” she said.
“Then a few days ago we had a cold front passing through, which did not have much of an impact except for pulling in that big mass of cold air.
“All those things together meant a really cold morning.”
Vicki Hartley of Lithgow Plumbing and Heating said the business had nearly 100 requests for repairs to burst pipes.
Tina Case, owner of Professionals Lithgow, said the phone “never stopped” ringing on Sunday.
“The plumbers have just been crazy busy,” she said.
“But people have been really understanding.”
