Lithgow gym, Prestige Boxing, took a small group of its youth and beginner boxers to compete in the titles held at Sutherland PCYC over two days, June 30 –July 1.
The event features over 80 bouts with a wide variety of fighters from ages 14 and up, women’s divisions, and a masters competition for boxers aged 41 years and over.
For three of the Prestige Boxing team, Tom Clark, Curtis Humby and Pawan Gajula, this was their first time in the ring for competition boxing.
This was Jye Smith’s third competition.
Leading these young warriors into battle was coach Roger Spence along with trainers John Johnstone, Brett Smith and Steve Clark. A small contingent of family and gym members made the trip to Sutherland to support the boys.
On the first day of the competition in the 65kg class, Pawan and Jye had the unlucky challenge of being drawn together for their first bout. Both boys put on a strong performance and a split points decision saw Pawan advance to the finals on Sunday.
Next to compete was Curtis Humby in the 70Kg class where a big-hearted effort saw Curtis fight toe to toe with his opponent. After his huge effort in round 3 it was just not quite enough for Curtis to defeat his opponent on a close points decision.
Tom Clark was the next to fight in the heavy weight 91kg division final. Tom stood only shoulder high to his opponent whose size was no deterrent to a determined Tom. After three very exciting and hard hitting rounds, on a split points decision Tom was defeated. He still walked away with the silver medal, ranking him second in the NSW 91kg youth division. This was a very well deserved reward for his first time in the ring.
On the second day of competition Pawan climbed into the ring for his finals bout to compete for the NSW 65kg division Title. Pawan fought like a man possessed, controlling the first two rounds over his opponent. In a hard fought third round, Pawan’s competitor returned in a high scoring round. Once again on a split point decision the bout was awarded to Pawan’s opponent. Pawan still held his head high and walked away with the silver medal, ranked second in NSW for his weight class.
All boys competed strongly and represented Lithgow and Prestige Boxing in a fantastic show of sportsmanship and heart.
The boys are nominated to compete in PCYC’s King of the Ring competition at Blacktown during the last weekend of July.
