At the May council meeting a motion to rename Portland’s Rotary Park to ‘Ron Bidwell OAM Rotary Park’ by Cr Maree Statham was amended by deputy mayor Wayne McAndrew to instead seek submissions from the public and consult with the Portland community on the most appropriate way to honour Mr Bidwell.
A report on the submissions will be taken back to Council.
Council is asking for any ideas on how to acknowledge Mr Bidwell’s legacy, as well as views on the suggestion to rename Rotary Park, of which Mr Bidwell was the volunteer caretaker.
Mr Bidwell was the founder of Portland’s ‘Signs of Yesteryear’ project as well as the ‘Wallnuts’ signwriter group. He was also a regular volunteer at Portland events.
Suggestions can be submitted until Friday, July 27, by email to council@lithgow.nsw.gov.au or by post to ‘General Manager’, Lithgow City Council, PO Box 19, Lithgow 2790.
