This week Tall Timbers pulled off the upset when the beat second placed Helmets 4–3 whilst Red Sox cemented first place by easily disposing of Miscues 6–1. Pockets pulled off a come from behind win to not only win the last game but to also take the aggregate by four points when they beat Jiggers 4–3. This week the penultimate round sees first versus second and if Red Sox can beat Helmets they wrap up the Minor Premiership and Helmets have not beaten Red Sox this comp and eight points separate them. Third placed Tall Timbers are two points in front of fourth placed Jiggers and they play each other with both teams are fighting for third place to get two bites of the cherry and Jiggers have not beaten Timbers all comp. Pockets are four points in front of Miscues and they play each other and this could determine who gets the wooden spoon or the last semi-final spot and like the other games Pockets have not beaten Miscues this comp.
Carpet One Tall Timbers versus Lithgow Valley Storage Helmets
Keith Morris versus Ian Miles: These two veterans are having a very good comp with both in the running for a position in the Regal Trophy. They played each other in the second round and then it was Morris who won that one so they are back at it with Miles form has improved. This was a slow game as both do not get around as quickly as they used to plus the fact there were a lot of missed opportunities and in the end Miles prevailed 54–25.
Lawrence Creasy versus Tom Drury: Creasy had a shocking start to the comp with a lot of losses early and recently has come good with a couple of recent wins. Drury had a flying start to the comp only losing two games for 9 wins and now has hit a wall with his last win April 10. Creasy had a 23 start and he used this well as he was keeping the score board ticking over whilst Drury was playing well early slowly catching up. Creasy played better at the back end of the game as he was confident as he cruised to win 72–44 adding to Drury’s woes.
Frank Wawn versus Brett Bradley: Wawn has won his last four games and has hit form at the right end of the competition and Bradley has been consistent with win one then lose one. This was a good game with both potting well and only a few mistakes being made and the difference between the two was that Bradley scored an 18 break which was enough to go onto to win 64–50.
Aaron Vandermeer versus Robert Farnsworth: This has been a break out comp for Vandermeer as he has won eight games with five losses winning his last two. Farnsworth has won seven for six losses but has won his last 3 and matching Vandermeer for form. They met in the first round then Farnsworth won by five points so Vandermeer was prepared for battle. Vandermeer was on from the start playing some good shots and Farnsworth showed some glimpses of form but virtually was sweating from watching the umpire constantly pulling the colours out of the pockets. Not known if Vandermeer got his extra confidence from a certain person watching him but he did very well to easily beat Farnsworth 70–25.
Maurie Smith versus RW Farnsworth: Smith has really found form after losing his first four games he won seven straight with a rare loss last week. Farnsworth since returning to Tuesday night snooker after a few years in the wilderness has won 12 games for just two losses and seems to be getting better. Smith likes to grind out a game making it hard for his opponent and this was no different and with a 22 start and then a 17 break Smith was off and running. This must have stunned Farnsworth as he was all at sea and not his usual fluent play. In the end Smith the Treasurer made Farnsworth pay his debt 89–40.
Bill Cook versus Dallas Thurlow: Cook is not having a good comp losing more than he has won and Thurlow is at 50% win/loss at this moment. Both like to play an open game with not much safety but a lot of mistakes occasionally pop up. This was close all the way to the end and when Thurlow scored a 16 break which was enough to win 62–52. Players of the match, Aaron Vandermeer and Ian Miles.
Hunter Mining Methods Miscues versus C & W Printing Red Sox
Kevin Slaven versus Trevor Cameron: Slaven must have bit his tongue when he found out he was playing Cameron because they have played twice with Cameron successful on both counts. The last game they played Cameron won 123–39 with Slaven scoring six points and Cameron just kept putting snookers on his opponent even when Tubby could not win. Slaven had a 35 start and was much better prepared this time as he played some good snooker to maintain the lead. Cameron played a steady game and was potting well and was catching Slaven and it ended up both needed the black to win. Cameron calmly potted the black to win 68–67. Cameron has won four games and three of them was against Slaven.
Allan Piggott versus Shannon Baer: Piggott has played eight games and he finally had his first win last game and Baer has been in great form winning his last four games. Baer beat Piggott in their last encounter and now Piggott had a win his confidence was high especially with a 38 start. Unfortunately for Piggott he went back to his old habit of not potting well and giving too many chances to score. Baer took his time and drew level with three balls left of which he potted to win 72–54.
Ritchie Bilby versus Tom Gaynor: The difference between these pairs comp is obvious with wins/losses Bilby is 6/9 and Gaynor has found the fountain of youth with 10/4 and a leading contender for the Regal Trophy. They played each other in the first round and Gaynor won by seven points. This was a very, very slow game due to both players missing the easiest of shots though it was close right to the end. Gaynor took advantage of what little luck was there to win 58–52.
Garry Bender versus Garry Nolan: The one thing that was for sure in this game is that Garry was going to be a winner. Bender started with a 14 point lead and he did very well to not only maintain that lead but slowly increase it as the game went on. Nolan started out well but at some point fell into a black hole as Bender went on to win 77 – 39.
Matt Tattersall versus Rod Denley: Tattersall has now found some consistency as the last couple of comps he is winning way more than losing and at this point of the comp he is 10/8 and Denley is not having a good time of it winning only three games. One of the games Denley did win was against Tattersall in the first round and then he was player of the match. Denley must like playing Tattersall as he came out playing safe and sure and did this right to the end. Tattersall like Nolan fell into a black hole and could not get motivated as Denley easily won 63–26 and again scored the player of the match.
Brian Nightingale versus Jeff Stait: Nightingale is not seeing the balls well this comp and thus with just two wins on the board is struggling. Stait is probably playing at his best as he has won 12 games for four losses. They played in the second round and that time Stait was the victor and he had to give 38 start this time. Stait was not at his best though what he had was enough to cover anything that Nightingale tried. Stait left the best to last though as he potted the last three for an 18 break to rake the game 69–63. Players of the match, Rod Denley and Garry Bender.
Williams and Sons Butchery Pockets versus Welch’s Highway Smash Repairs Jiggers
Dillan McBey versus Wade Barrington: McBey is in his first comp and his first game he won by his opponent going in/off the black and has lost every game since. Barrington is into his second comp and finally has won a couple of games lately so this was set up as a good test by both players. It was fairly close early in the game with each going shot for shot but once Barrington made a mistake McBey took advantage and made two breaks of 21 and 15 which he then defended his lead to win 67–30 for his first win of his own accord.
Steve Hewitt versus David Adams: Hewitt is not going so well with 6 wins and 11 losses and his opponent Adams is faring better with six wins and five losses. These pair played each other in the second round and then Adams won by five points. Adams had a seven start and was on song early as he went about potting some good shots and his safety game was sound as well. Hewitt was taking the easy shots that Adams left up but also Hewitt played some good shots early. Adams was too strong as he successfully shut out Hewitt 80–36.
Brad Preston versus Troy Clarke: Preston is on a roll at the moment winning his last three games and Clarke is having a very lean season in winning only three games. Preston had to chase 26 points and this could have been a big task especially if Clarke pulled off some shots which at times he has a tendency to do. Preston did not have to worry as Clarke was missing shots and was setting Preston up and he quickly chewed up the points and took the lead. Preston scored a 13 break to take the game 70–37 leaving Clarke to only score 11 points all game.
Jeff Holt versus Kyle Lewis: These pair is very close in their win/loss stats as Holt is 9/9 and Lewis is 50 per cent 8/8 so this was set up as a good game. Holt is in the Regal top eight and Lewis is trying to get himself back into contention as he has lost his last four. This was a very close game as they play a similar style of open snooker and a lot of mistakes. Holt was only four points behind with four colours left on the table such was the closeness of the game. Lewis took a deep breath and approached the table and four shots and a 22 point break later Lewis took the game 59–33.
Kyle Furbank versus Wayne Lewis: This was Furbank’s fourth game against his old team and he had just the single win to show for it and with 28 start he had a determination to win. Lewis has lost his last five games and now he was desperate to get back in the running for a Regal Trophy spot. They both played well for the most part and Furbank was maintaining his lead for a good while. Lewis could almost see it slipping away as he knuckled down scored two breaks of 16 and 13 and went on to win 64–55.
Shane Eagle versus Trent Lewis: It was an interesting situation Jiggers were up 3-2 and were nine points in front of the aggregate. Lewis is travelling very nicely as he has maintained a top five spot in the Regal and should have been ready for the Eagle. Another good game as both did not leave anything in their tank and it was a mistake made by Lewis that saw Eagle take the game 64–51 and won the aggregate by four points. Players of the match were Dillan McBey and David Adams.
Point score: Red Sox 80, Helmets 72, Tall Timbers 62, Jiggers 60, Pockets 54, Miscues 50.
