After the success of the 2017 Gun Amnesty the Chifley Police District and New South Wales Police Force are once again holding its gun amnesty.
Anyone with a firearm-related item or an unregistered firearm in their possession will have the chance to legally dispose, or register it without penalty between July 1 and September 30, 2018.
During the 2017 Firearms Amnesty, more than 26,700 firearms and firearm-related items were handed in for destruction, sale and registration in NSW, 275 from Chifley.
Residents of the Chifley LAC handed in the fifth highest amount of firearms to police during the 2017 gun amnesty out of all of NSW’s local area commands.
Deputy Commissioner Regional NSW Field Operations Gary Worboys, said gun theft is a major concern for NSW Police, particularly in regional areas.
“We are working hard to address the issue of firearm theft and it’s important we all work together and have the support of licensed firearm owners to make sure people who own guns keep them stored safely and securely,” Deputy Commissioner Worboys said.
“Every firearm captured in the amnesty is one we previously knew nothing about and risked falling into the hands of criminal gangs or organised crime syndicates.”
