An American drama directed by Fred Zinnerman, starring Jane Fonda, Vannessa Redgrave, Jason Robards, Meryl Streep, and Maxmillian Schell, the film is based on a chapter from Lillian Hellman’s book Pentimento about her long friendship with with Julia, who fought against the Nazis in the years prior to WWII.
The film was nominated for 11 academy awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress for Jane Fonda.
It ended up winning three awards including best supporting actor (Robards), best supporting actress (Redgrave) and best screenplay.
Jane Fonda plays the struggling writer in the film. Vannesa Redgrave plays the medical student Julia who attends Oxford and studies with such luminaries as Sigmund Freud.
