The two front runners Red Sox and Helmets suffered defeats which dented their prides and which they may take out on their next opponent. Tall Timbers pulled off the big surprise this week when they beat Red Sox 4 – 3 though Red Sox won the aggregate point which seems to be at an unusual high in this comp because very rarely does a losing team win the agg.
Pockets this comp had to forfeit two games and when they get a full complement they can be very dangerous as Helmets found out when Pockets won 4 – 3. In the battle of Club Lithgow Jiggers easily accounted for Miscues 6 – 1 and out of the three games they have faced off Jiggers are up 2 – 1 with one more round to go.
Carpet One Tall Timbers versus C & W Printing Red Sox
Keith Morris versus Shannon Baer: Morris is in a purple patch of form running hot having won his last four games and Baer went hard early in the comp with some good wins but now has hit the wall but not playing badly either. This was a slow game though a very good game by both players Morris used his 31 start to perfection as he was potting so well and Baer could not get into his groove until late into the match. Baer did get very close in the end though Morris did enough to take victory 67 – 58.
Frank Wawn versus Leo Keeley: Both Wawn and Keeley have won three and lost three games so this was set up to a close game of which it ended up being. Wawn showed good form as he took an early lead of which he held until the brown ball on the last of the colours. Keeley was doing well to stay with Wawn and he did this with good safety. Keeley finally took the lead on the blue ball only to see Wawn play a very lucky shot on the pink and he also took the black to take the game 52 – 42.
Maurie Smith versus Garry Nolan: Smith had eye problems early in the comp which was affecting him in his game as he lost more than he was winning and once that cleared up he has won his last two. Nolan has won his last three games and has finally found the consistency he has been looking for. Smith was on the ball early playing well and maintaining a slender lead with Nolan never too far away. Nolan played some very good shots and finally caught up to Smith on the colours only to see Smith pot the black for a 59 – 46 win.
Michael Andrews versus John Lyons: Andrews had six weeks off to recover from a wrist operation and last week came back and won but this week he was up against Lyons who has been in good form though Lyons has lost his last two games they have been black ball results so this was set up as a good tussle between two good veterans. Andrews was on from the start and increased the 13 point lead he had started with. Lyons was missing a lot early and once he settled down he scored a 24 break and he was very close. As hard as Lyons tried he could not bridge the gap and Andrews held the lead to win 75 – 54.
Bill Cook versus Tom Gaynor: Cook sitting at 50 per cent win/loss was up against a very in form Gaynor six wins and two losses and playing like a real champion. Cook was on from the start potting some good shots and once he fouled on the black it was what Gaynor was after as this gave him the confidence he needed as he was all at sea early. Gaynor proved too good again as he sent Cook packing 77 – 31.
Michael McCosker versus Jeff Stait: McCosker was up against the inform player of the comp in Stait as he has won eight and lost two and at the moment seems unbeatable. This was a miss match even though McCosker had an 11 start all he could manage was another 11 points on top of that showing how bad he went. Stait was just unstoppable as he has three breaks of 20, 17 and 17and only missed two shots all game. Mitchsuvius was trying to keep him himself from erupting even though he tried to break his cue on his fore head once he did keep it in check as Stait gave him a massive lesson 88 – 22. The players of the match were Michael Andrews and Jeff Stait.
Williams and Sons Butchery Pockets versus Lithgow Valley Storage Helmets
Brett Holt versus Tom Drury: Holt has been playing well in patches but very ordinary otherwise and Drury is another veteran having a cracking go with eight wins and 1 loss. Holt really put all stops out for this game as he was having a real good go and Drury himself was not doing much wrong it was Holt who dominated 64 – 44.
Dillon McBey versus RW Farnsworth: McBey and Farnsworth are good friends away from snooker and this was an interesting match as they practice together. Farnsworth has not had any bad games as he has seven wins and one loss and McBey has lost his last two. This was a good even game though McBey had 23 start he made Farnsworth work hard for all his points. McBey almost had it won but Farnsworth came from behind to win on the black 59 – 57.
Brad Preston versus Dallas Thurlow: In 2017 Preston only played seven games over two comps for five wins and has only missed one game this comp and is going terribly losing his last five. Thurlow has played six games thus far with mixed form so this game was a battle and very long. Thurlow played a very steady game and was potting some good shots and Preston made more mistakes than he potted though when he did eventually pot one it was a good shot. Thurlow was just too consistent as he pulled ahead to win 53 – 40.
Jeff Holt versus Ian Bulkeley: Since having a couple of comps off Holt is back playing well and Bulkeley is not going badly but has his mind elsewhere. Holt had 37 start and this was quickly halved as Bulkeley scored an 18 break and the game was on. Holt did later counter with a 15 break and this was the difference as Holt went on to win 81 – 64.
Steve Hewitt versus Logan Spice: Hewitt has had a lot of losses but a few of them were on the black so he is having no luck and Spice is enjoying this comp and is playing well. Spice is a much improved player and this showed this game as once he took the lead he was not headed though it did come down to the black again for Hewitt but Spice won 54 – 43.
Shane Eagle versus Ian Miles: Eagle had a terrible start to the comp with one win in six games but then he hit form and has won his last four games. Miles is travelling about 50% and he admits to not playing well even still he is winning ugly. This was a good game though mistakes were made it was Eagle who played better to win 61 – 44. The players of the match were Brett Holt and RW Farnsworth.
Welch’s Highway Smash repairs Jiggers versus Hunter Mining Methods Miscues
David Adams versus Ritchie Bilby: Adams since he’s retired is having resurgence in snooker and is actually winning games and playing well. Bilby had a short spurt of three consecutive wins other than that has lost all of his games and had to chase a 17 start. Adams was not about to let this game out of his reach as he was in form from the start and Bilby tried to chase all game but come up short as Adams won 50 – 23.
Wayne Lewis versus Kevin Slaven: Lewis has been playing well of late having six wins and Slaven had had his token wins for the comp now he is back to his old habits of losing. Lewis was in an unusual position of having to chase 30 points before a ball was hit and would normally have affected him in the past. Lewis had two breaks of 11 and 12 which put a good dent in the lead and he just kept the pressure on Slaven. Slaven was missing a lot of shots and Lewis took advantage and won easily 75 – 56.
Justin Nelson versus Brian Nightingale: Nelson has been travelling pretty well losing a few games along the way but when you’re on a -28 handicap you always have to give start. Nightingale has only had two wins and has not been playing well and with 49 start he only had to sink a few balls to make it hard for Nelson. Nightingale potted the first red and the last blue to score six points all game but it was all Nelson. Nelson scored a 21 break and did not do much wrong as he nearly reached 100 to win 99 – 55.
Troy Clarke versus Matt Tattersall: Clarke finally won his first game of the comp last game and was cock-a-hoop about it to and was ready for his next victim in Tattersall. Tattersall gave Clarke 37 start though it was not beyond him it was a big ask especially if Clarke potted a few. There was no need to worry as Clarke scored 3 points all game and Tattersall scored two breaks of 15 and 13 and he easily accounted for Clarke 64 – 46.
Trent Lewis versus Allan Piggott: Last time these two played was in the first round and Lewis won by 20 points so Piggott was trying to not only beat him but look for his first win. Lewis has improved immensely but he still has a tendency to try and split the white ball in half by the ferocity of his shots. Piggott started out alright though the mistakes started to creep in and Lewis just sat back and took advantage as he cruised to a 45 – 28.
Kyle Lewis versus Dennis Goodwin: Lewis did not want to be the only Lewis on the night to lose so he was bent on winning this and Goodwin was going to try to be his team’s second winner. This was a good game as both plied their trade and it ebbed and flowed both ways and in the end Lewis was 59 – 38 winner. The players of the match were Justin Nelson and Matt Tattersall.
Point score: Red Sox 50, Helmets 47, Jiggers 37, Tall Timbers 36, Pockets 33, Miscues 28
