A sudden electrical storm put a premature end to racing at the fifth meeting of the season at King’s Auto Parts Cullen Bullen Raceway on Saturday, March 24. The meeting was hosted by the Portland District Motor Sports Club.

The storm dropped a deluge of water on the track making it unsafe to race, ruining what was shaping up to be an entertaining meeting.
Mitch Duggan won the opening heat of the Centennial Coal Street Stocker class from Kevin Sawdy and Andrew Blackley while Corey Foyle of Muswellbrook claimed victory in the second from Blackley and Duggan in a photo finish.
Great close racing also came from the Lithgow City Council Four Cylinder class with three drivers from Orange reigning supreme.
Josh Goldie snatched a first heat victory over Keil Swadling and John Spicer but Swadling turned the tables on Goldie to claim the win with Spicer again third followed closely by Nathan Williams from Moruya.
Hot on the heels of taking third place in the New Star class of the NSW Junior Sedan Title the previous Saturday at Lismore, Jackson Goldie of Orange won the opening heat of the Portland RSL Club Junior Class in his Corolla followed closely by Jaiden Healey of Portland who won the New Star class and was second outright in the NSW Title, with diminutive Max Essai in third place.
Healey won the second heat from Sydney youngster Dean Giffin and Tyler Burnham in third followed by Goldie, Essai, young Jake Clark of Sydney and Essai’s sister Chelsea.
The Portland Newsagency Series Production class produced some great driving with Peter Simmons of Oberon fitting new racing rubber to his Commodore to win heat one from lady lead foot Shanyn Duggan and Blayney’s Bruce Bradley.
Cortina driving Greg Williams of Moruya was awarded the laurels of heat two from Simmons and Andrew Kingsman after Sarah Bradley’s Commodore suddenly stopped entering turn four creating chaos for following drivers.
Rounding out the meeting were the open wheeler classes.
Rob Swain totally cleaned up in the Modlite Class winning both heats from Will Butler, Andrew Martin, Kenny Brooks, Ronnie Scheers Jnr and Stephen Hine.
Demonstrations of speedway racing of yesteryear were provided by the booming V8 Vintage Speedcars driven by Lance Wilson,Tony Dale, Jason Pruen, Paul Puckridge, Matthew Ward, Bob Newman and Dick Drury.
The 2017-18 speedway season continues on Saturday April 14 at the King’s Auto Parts Cullen Bullen Raceway commencing at the earlier time of 2pm.
