A pair of Australian sporting legends came to town recently for the Wallerawang Community & Sports Club Sportman's Dinner.

However a local icon took centre stage alongside Steve Glasson and Steve 'Blocker' Roach.

John Nicol, widely known as Jack, was honoured as the Wallerawang Sporting Identity of the Year for his contribution to sport in the local community.

Sports club general manager and member of the selection committee Ian Pender said the award could not have gone to a more deserving person.

"Jack has been involved in junior and senior sport in Wang since the late 60s or early 70s," Mr Pender said.

The 84-year-old was had a long-standing involvement in a range of sports including rugby league, cricket and bowls and only retired from his responsibilities last year.

Aside from particpating as a player and coach, Mr Nichol covered a host of administrative positions within the sports clubs of Wallerawang.

His most notable roles included coaching the Wallerawang Warriors and acting as president of the bowls club.

Mr Nichol also took the step to serve on the match committees of Blue Mountains District and NSW bowls.

All his efforts convinced the Wallerawang men's bowls club to put his name forward for the sporting identity of the year.

"He's left a big hole in the bowls, I know there's always others to fill it, he did a marvelous job and was there for a long time," Mr Pender said.

"He's been probably an icon in Wang as far as sporting committees and all that for the best part of 50 years.

"With the support of his wife and the family, they were a big part of it too.

Mr Nicol’s wife Joan accepted the award on his behalf as he was unable to make it due to being unwell.

"His wife was always there when he was on the committees… It was probably as much her award as his."

Ahead of the award presentation, former Australian lawn bowls representative Steve Glasson and former professional rugby league star Steve ‘Blocker’ Roach gave the crowd plenty to laugh about.

Steve Glasson is arguably Australia’s greatest ever male lawn bowler. He has won in excess of 100 events, including 19 Australian championships and the national indoor title on nine occasions.

Roach was an aggressive and powerful prop forward for the Balmain Tigers in the 1980s and early 90s. He also represented NSW and Australia.

Glasson is currently the Australian national lawn bowls coach while Roach lends his voice to games on Fox Sports.
