The Bathurst club is looking to attract new members and introduce more people to the sport through a free come and try day this Saturday.
BMX is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia and the Bathurst club is keen to build on that trend.
“The idea behind the come and try is it’s a relaxed and casual opportunity to try the sport to see if you like it and meet local riders and get on the track,” Hayley Wolfenden, a Bathurst member who placed second at state, said.
“BMX is a sport for all ages with riders ranging from as young as two all the way to 60 plus. It’s one of the only sports I know of that the grassroots get to interact closely with pro riders every meet.
“BMX is about having fun and meeting new friends. Some people even have what they call a ‘BMX’ family.
“There are no requirements where turn up. Although BMX can feel like an a team sport given the camaraderie, it’s still an individual sport too.”
The Bathurst track is one of the best in Australia and has hosted both national and Oceania titles over the past two years, with big names of the sport such as Saya Sakakibara having put her skills to the test there.
However, at the come and try day the atmosphere will be much more relaxed.
“You don’t need to have all the gear to participate in the come and try day, just bring your bike helmet and bike if you have them and wear long sleeves, pants and enclosed shoes,” Wolfenden said.
“There will be professional riders and coaches there on the day and opportunities to sign up for the sport if you like it on the day.”
The day runs from 11am-2pm at the Bathurst Bike Park, with entry to the precinct via Vale Road, next to Omya.
Meanwhile, the Bathurst BMX Club has received some good news from the state body.
BMX NSW has awarded the club hosting rights for a state series round on April 29 next year.
