St Paul’s Anglican Church in Lithgow has partnered with Anglicare to open a fresh food pantry on the second Sunday of every month.
Fresh Food Sundays will also be running at St Stephen’s in Portland.
The service is open to anyone with a health care card, pension card, immigration card or letter from the rector.
Community members can bring a bag similar to the supermarket reusable bags and have it filled with fresh food by a volunteer.
The selection includes fruit and vegetables plus bread, juice and ready made soups.
St Paul’s member Peta O’Meley said her church are seeking to get behind this initiative as it believes Christians are called by Jesus to love and care for the people and community around them.
The fresh food pantry will kick off this Sunday at St Paul’s Anglican on Roy Street at 11.30am as well as St Stephen’s Portland on Williwa Street at 4.30pm.
Residents are also able to head into the Lithgow Information and Neighbourhood Centre during the week to stock up their pantry through the Second Bite Food Rescue program.
