Of the 270,000 who came home, a further 60,000 died within 10 years of their return.

Many of these, and their families, suffered more than those who were killed.

Most townships in the Lithgow district already show the names of people who were killed and served on their memorials.

Not so with Lithgow itself.

The existing Cenotaph in Queen Elizabeth Park only shows the names of 134 people who made the ultimate sacrifice.

A committee has recently been formed with a view to having the several hundred people from the Lithgow township who returned from World War I honoured on a commemorative plaque.

The committee comprises president Greg Noble, vice president Rod Gurney, treasurer John Barlow, secretary Ian Burrett and media liaison officer Garry Johnson.

Both Lithgow Council and the Lithgow City RSL Sub-branch are happy to become involved in this project after the necessary research proves that people recommended to go on the plaque have a definite Lithgow township connection.

To make the plaque become a reality the committee desperately needs the help of the Lithgow community in three ways.

If you have a computer and can use the internet you can help in researching the project.

You may be retired, a student or someone else who can join the group in believing that returned World War I service people should be honoured.

You may be a descendant who can prove your World War I ancestor had a definite Lithgow township connection.

You may be a business or someone else who can direct the committee members to records that assist.
