Follow @BgoAddyCalifornia Gully op shop will reopen on Monday, rising from the ashes of the June 2010 fire that all but destroyed the building.Uniting Care op shop volunteer co-ordinator Della Belz said the fire had been “absolutely devastating”.Ms Belz said thousands of dollars worth of donations were lost in the blaze.Insurance was only able to cover shop fittings such as the cash register and air-conditioners.“There was a lot of red tape, especially with the asbestos,” Ms Belz said.“The whole site had to be completely cleared and flattened.“It was a long and stressful time for us and the owners of the property.”But out of fire comes new life, and Ms Belz said the op shop was back and better than ever.Volunteers have been collecting and cleaning some top-of-the-range stock especially for the opening. There are racks of vintage dresses and cabinets full of collectables.“It’s laid out so much better... it’s a brand-new store,” Ms Belz said.“There’s lots of wonderful bargains, vintage wear, evening wear, dress-ups for the children.“It’s really worth a look, even if you’re not buying.”Everyone was excited about the reopening, Ms Belz said.“Lots of people have been coming past, looking in the windows, ringing us up and asking when it’s going to reopen.”Ms Belz said she expected a line of people outside the door come 10am on Monday, and a live broadcast by Phoenix FM is planned to entertain the crowd. But it’s not just avid op shoppers who are lauding the return of the California Gully institution. The shop’s committed group of volunteers can’t wait to get back into it.“It’s quite exciting for us because our volunteers have been waiting a long time to reopen,” Ms Belz said.“This place is home for a lot of them.”Tracey Hayes will be managing the reinvigorated shop and Ms Belz said the support from all the volunteers had been fantastic.“They have put so much time in here, sometimes every day, it’s been like a beehive,” she said.“We are so lucky to have such a great group of volunteers.“I want to thank the community as well. Fitzpatrick’s Home Hardware are going to donate all the timber for a new back room, and local builder Brock Hayes and plasterer Kane Hayes are giving their time free of charge.”California Gully op shop will be open from 10am to 4pm on weekdays and from 10am to 1pm on Saturdays.
