A VICTORIAN man has been charged after a crash that killed a Tamworth mother near Bendemeer late last month. The 62-year-old from Berriwillock in Victoria remains in a Hunter hospital recovering from injuries suffered in the crash. He's facing charges of dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning death, and has been served with a notice to face Tamworth court in May. The head-on collision on the New England Highway on the morning of February 28 claimed the life of a 44-year-old Tamworth mother-of-three. Police from the Crash Investigation Unit in Tamworth have been examining the cause of the crash and the circumstances leading up to it, and after investigations, charged the driver. READ ALSO: Police will allege as part of their case that the man was en route from Lismore to Victoria and, shortly before 7.30am, crossed to the northbound lane near Rocky Gully north of Bendemeer. The 44-year-old woman was going north from Tamworth towards Armidale when the Volkswagen SUV travelling south hit her Suzuki Swift head-on. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the woman died at the scene. The 62-year-old driver of the SUV suffered a back injury and fractured leg, and was taken to Tamworth hospital by ambulance. He was later airlifted by the region's Westpac Rescue Helicopter to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, where he remains. Specialist police examined the crash scene for several hours in the wake of the fatal crash, which saw the highway shut for much of the day. The wrecks were towed from the scene and will undergo mechanical examination as part of the investigation. Police have confirmed the man holds a Victorian licence; his driving privileges in NSW have been suspended until he faces court. Investigations into the crash are continuing.
