Draw March 20, week nine at Club Lithgow Miscues versus Tall Timbers and at The Workies Helmets versus Jiggers and Red Sox versus Pockets.
With the lead for the competition changing weekly the top of the table clash between Red Sox and Helmets had the hallmarks being a thriller of a game. Alas it was not to be as Red Sox for the second time this comp beat Helmets 5–2 and now have the wood on them. Miscues in their game against Pockets were trying to get off the bottom of the ladder even though they beat Pockets 4–3 they still maintain that position. Tall Timbers defeated Jiggers 4–3 and they move within 1 point of third position right on Jiggers hammer.
C & W Printing Red Sox versus Lithgow Valley Storage Helmets:
Leo Keeley versus Tom Drury: Both these players are veterans and are still playing well especially Keeley who in his 90’s still pots a good ball and has won his last three games. Drury is playing like a 20 year old and has just tasted defeat once this comp and is literally on fire. Keeley in a week reversed his form as he could not get started at all even though he managed 22 points it was Drury who took all the chances and paid off to easily win 59–22.
Tom Gaynor versus RW Farnsworth: Gaynor with six wins and Farnsworth win 5 wins and both with 1 loss this was a match worth watching. Gaynor had to play well as Farnsworth has been practicing like mad and is getting better though Gaynor likes to take his time and play the right shot. Gaynor was really at his best and with 18 start Farnsworth was rattled early. Farnsworth composed himself and came back with some fine shots that helped with the chase. Farnsworth made his move with the last three colours left as he systematically sank the 3 to come from behind to win 58–47.
Garry Nolan versusDianne Stait: Nolan has had a mixed start and he up against Stait who is not regularly playing as she runs the team though her form has been terrible other than her last game which she finally won. Well Nolan blasted out of the cannon early and was on target as he was going mad and Stait well she came out firing blanks and not making any impression. Nolan did his usual fall asleep in the middle stages which saw Stait score some good points. Nolan came out of his slumber and really came home strong and blew Stait away 83–21.
Rod Denley versus Robert Farnsworth: Both have a 50 per cent win/loss stats and one of them was going to get the extra 1 in their win column. Denley started out playing well and was keeping Farnsworth at arm’s length and was looking good. Farnsworth just kept plugging away and in the end Denley did just enough to win 53–37.
Peter Warner versus Brett Bradley: Another week and another big start Warner has to chase as Bradley got 32 start and if he was on Warner might be in trouble. Bradley did not fire but he knew he was in a fight as Warner never gives up as he is a determined player. Warner took his time picked the shots, played safe and eventually took the lead to win 70–62.
Jeff Stait versus Ian Miles: Stait has been really steady and Miles started out the comp is fine fashion has hit the wall lately. Once Stait started he could not be stopped and Miles did everything wrong though he did score seven points as Stait went on the rampage 88 – 28. Players of the match, Jeff Stait and RW Farnsworth.
Williams and Sons Butchery Pockets versus Hunter Mining Methods Miscues:
Steve Hewitt versus Garry Bender: Hewitt is not going that well this comp and he was playing Bender who is having a good comp. A slow game that was still entertaining and it was Bender who continued his good form to win 68–30.
Shane Eagle versus Kevin Slaven: Eagle won last week after having four consecutive losses and he was determined to keep his winning ways and Slaven has done his usual start strong then peter out. Eagle had to give 18 start and this was quickly erased when he scored a 17 break to catch Slaven. Eagle is a quick player and even the slow play of Slaven did not distract him as Eagle put Slaven to the sword 65–49.
Kyal Furbank versus Matt Tattersall: Furbank has now started to improve his safety shots and his game is coming together and Tattersall rarely plays safety as he likes to attack. This was a good and close game once Tattersall caught up the score and both played some very good shots. Furbank is still making some errors and this cost him as Tattersall won by the barest of margins 60-59.
Jeff Holt versus Col Tattersall: It is not often Holt has to give start on his handicap but this time he gave Tattersall seven start. Another slow game as both miss a lot and this game Holt made the least mistakes and even scored a 15 break. Tattersall was huffing and puffing trying to get round the table and was making many mistakes. Holt won well 60–24 and Tattersall’s team-mates are running a book to see if Tattersall will win a game this comp.
Trystan Ford versus Dennis Goodwin: This was Fords first game in three weeks and his form has been scratchy at best and Goodwin is a quiet achiever going about his business with little fuss. Ford was doing well considering his lack of table time and Goodwin was never far away on the score board. A close game as Goodwin made the most of his shots to narrowly win 55–53.
Dillon McBey versus Ritchie Bilby: McBey made his debut to LASA snooker last week and won that even though it was his opponent that made the mistake and Bilby sure was not going to take it easy on the newbie. Bilby is back on track the previous two weeks after losing his first 4 games. This was another very close run thing as both were going shot for shot. In the end both played well and it was the experience of Bilby that shone through 63–58. Players of the match, Garry bender and Jeff Holt.
Welch’s Highway Smash Repairs Jiggers v Carpet one Tall Timbers:
Trent Lewis versus Aaron Vandermeer: Lewis suffered only his second loss last game so he was keen on taking that out on Vandermeer. Vandermeer is a much improved player since only been in the comp for a couple of years now and will be no push over. Lewis was pretty solid and though Vandermeer got close Lewis was in control of the match to win 66–55.
Justin Nelson versus Bill Cook: Nelson has not started with the usual good form and has been a bit off his game and Cook has fallen into a mini slump trying to find form. Nelson had to chase 45 points from the start so the challenge was on early and he managed an 18 break to help his chase. Cook could only manage a few small breaks and it did not take long for Nelson scrape home 70-69.
Kyle Lewis versus Maurie Smith: Lewis has come out of the jungle to finally string two wins together and he was up against Smith who finally won his first game last week. Lewis was taking advantage of his 21 start and was sinking some good balls and Smith though seemed a little rattled came home strong to win 71–56 sending Lewis back into the Jumanji game.
Wayne Lewis versus Keith Morris: Both have really had good starts to the comp so this was an interesting game as both are their team’s captain. Lewis started out well and had a 13 break which helped him to take the lead and was on track until he was derailed which saw Morris then come to the fore. Like the little engine that could Morris was the engine that did and with a late 11 break took the game 52–35.
Troy Clarke versus Michael McCosker: Clarke was looking for that elusive first win and McCosker was 50/50 with his stats and not playing badly. Clarke had 40 start on McCosker and was putting some good points down and McCosker never panicked playing some very good shots mixed with safety and snookers. With three colours left McCosker sank the blue and pink for an 11 break and hit the lead for the first time by one point. In a heart breaking moment Clarke walked up slapped the black into the pocket to pull the rug out from McCosker 80–74 and McCosker was heard mumbling like Sideshow Bob afterwards.
Greg Sutton versus Lawrence Creasy: Whoever won this game their team win so there was a lot riding on the result? Sutton went ahead early and as usual hit the wall and Creasy made a comeback and took the lead. Sutton needed a snooker in the end and the last 3 balls and whatever was going through his mind at one stage no-one knew because Sutton picked up the cue ball and moved it giving away five points. Creasy sank the last two scoring 13 and easily won 60–28. Players of the match, Bill Cook and Trent Lewis.
Point score: Red Sox 38, Helmets 37, Jiggers 26, Tall Timbers 24, Pockets 23, Miscues 20
