With 22 teams competing on the day it was going to be good test of the squad’s pre-season training so far leading up to the tournament. Wolves played the Peak Hill Roosters in the fist match and came away with a strong 16-0 win playing some great attacking football.
The second match seen them take on the Woodbridge Cup’s 2017 Premiers Eugowra Golden Eagles and in a game that went down to the final bell, 4-6 to the Eagles.
With the temperature reaching 34 degrees, the ladies took on the Group 11’s grand finalists, the Parkes Spacecats. The game was an arm wrestle from the start to the finish with the Wolves grinding out a 2-0 win.
It came down to the final pool game to decide the finals spot against old rivals the Blayney Bears. The match went from one end of the field to the other, with neither side backing down.
With repeat position Blayney managed to scored a trying late in the match to see them get the win 6-0.
Coach John Legge was very impressed with the squads first run together. The side gelled from the first game, working hard for each other in defence in very hot conditions and showing signs of good things to come in attack.
With some new faces joining the returning players from the 2017 semi final squad, all looks promising for the 2018 season for the Wolves side.
The Wolves were part of a huge gathering of league tag teams at Canowindra.
Bathurst St Pat’s took out a third consecutive Western Challenge after a 6-2 victory over Orange Hawks at Tom Clyburn Oval on Sunday.
In a replay of last year’s final, the blue and whites were made to come from behind to knock off a classy Hawks line-up in the decider.
Elise Woods scored the decisive try mid-way through the final period while skipper Mish Somers nailed the conversion from near the sideline to hand St Pat’s a hat-trick of titles at the annual pre-season event.
A whopping 22 teams made it to Canowindra for the carnival, which has grown to incorporate teams from every competition in the Western Rams region.
Blayney and Dubbo Westside were the other two teams to top their respective pools and progress through to the finals.
