On March 10, the City Grade 5 players were up against Lithgow Workmen’s Club and were confident of a strong display. This was quickly dispelled with a commanding 9-1 win for the visiting Workies bowlers.
The only joy for City came from Kerry Clarke, Frank Mierczak, Barry Perry and Gil Mendoza who scored a clear, but at times tight, 24-19 win over the D Bunting skipped side.
Despite winning nearly half of the ends, Les Barnes, Peter Rutherford, Peter Kearney and Mick Wholohan found the going too hard against L Slattery and his quartet, going down 27-19 while it was an all the way 32-11 win for T. Schram and his players over Warren Kennedy, Jim Kelly, Wayne Allan and Gil Mendoza.
It will be another local derby of sorts this weekend, March 17 when the City squad takes on Wang on the artificial green at Wang.
The sides are: Kerry Clarke, Frank Mierczak, Barry Perry and Athol Roach; Les Barnes, Peter Rutherford, Stan Campbell and Mick Wholohan; Warren Kennedy, Jim Kelly, Peter Kearney and Gil Mendoza; manager is Ken Potter.
In Grade 7, City was up against the strong Orange Country Club side and got off to a good start, leading in the first third of the match up before Orange City came storming home to win, also 9-1.
John Perry skipped his team of Jim Bannerman, Ian Northey and Barry Achurch to a tight 18-16 win, but that was where the joy ended for the host club.
Dave Robson, Garry Sutherland, Iggy Vadkerti and Darrell Wright were beaten out on the last end to go down 21-20 while Ian Birk, Joe Banasiak, Dave Hunter and Ritchie Bilby also suffered a narrow 20-18 loss, to see Orange CC get the aggregate by a solitary shot, 57-56.
Sunday March 18 sees Lithgow City on the road to take on Orange City at Orange and the teams are: Ian Birk, Dave Hunter, Angus MacKinnon, and Ritchie Bilby. Dave Robson, Iggy Vadkerti, Bruce Gibbons and Don Kipp. John Perry, Jim Bannerman, Ian Northey and Richard Forbes, manager is Lesley Wright.
