Police said the unknown persons who accessed the railway attempted to push three carriages up the incline but only managed to get one up.
They then let the vehicle freewheel down the incline before it finally rolled into a wall.
“It caused a large amount of damage,” a Lithgow police officer said.
The brakes were also removed from the carriages, causing them to slam into each other.
“Damage was also caused to the other two carriages in the attempt to move them.”
Police suspect a vehicle was used to transport the carriage up the railway.
The incident was not caught on CCTV, however, forensic police are performing a full examination of the site.
Police said the incident occurred on a secluded section of the railway between Bell and Zig Zag, some kilometres from the Bells Line of Road.
The damage was reported to police on the following Sunday. Police said graffiti on the railway’s carriages had occurred previously.
A reader also reported to the Lithgow Mercury that he had noticed three track panels, including rails and more than forty sleepers, had been removed from Browns Loop, after visiting the railway recently.
Police said a theft at Browns Loop had not been reported.
More to come.
