The Lithgow City greens were the venue for the Section 4 play-offs over the weekend where the City teams skipped by Warren Kennedy and Ian Townsend were chasing honours to see who will contest this weekend’s Zone finals at Bathurst City.
Warren Kennedy and Al and Don Kenniff were first up on Saturday morning but failed to progress any further.
Ian Townsend and his side of Frank Mierczak and Peter Kearney received a first round bye before being successful in the afternoon games. This trio then fronted up for Sunday morning’s semi finals but were eliminated by Orange Country Club.
The Orange team of L.Stinson, B.Callaway and T.Stokes then went on to defeat the Bathurst City side 22-16 in the sectional final on Sunday afternoon.
Stinson and his players will now contest this weekendís Zone finals in Bathurst.
Play is now nearing the semi final stage in the City clubís major singles championship with a further two games being played over the weekend.
In a marathon affair that lasted 41 ends Graham Pitt was able to outlast Jim Bannerman 31-26 where neither bowler could lay claim to holding a major advantage, the lead swapping hands many times.
It was only in the closing stages where Pitt opened up a five shot advantage after the scores had been tied at 23-all after 34 ends.
Five shots on two ends gave Pitt his advantage but Bannerman refused to give in, winning three ends in a row to trail 28-26. Pitt scored a single to edge ahead before gaining three shots to final claim a win in a high quality affair.
The other match saw Joe Banasiak finally get onto the green where he was up against 2017 minor singles titleholder Bob Kiernan.
Kiernan held the early advantage leading 6-2 and then 11-3 before Banasiak started to find his pace and grass to claw back to 14-all and the getting his nose in front 19-14.
Like Bannerman in the earlier game, Kiernan refused to give in, regaining the lead 23-19 before Banasiak won five of the last six ends to claim a 31-26 victory.
With the Zone triples occupying the majority of green space over the weekend social bowlers had to take the minor role, Sunday’s mixed social bowls going to Graham Pitt, Karen Mitchell and Darrell Wright.
Social Bowling: Friday’s mixed bowl resulted in a big win to Ian Birk and Gloria Davidson with a big 12+12 from Col Wotton, Cheryl Wotton and Col Quince with 11+10.
Twilight Bowling: Last weeks men’s twilights had top spot going to Stan Campbell, Ron Simmons and Peter Nightingale with 11+9, just ahead of the 10+5 from Frank Mierczak, Scott Simmons and Dave Mathias.
The final social event for the week was the men’s mid week affair where Bob Kiernan, Paul Crane and Col Quince triumphed, their 15+21 edging out the 14+6 from Les Barnes, Bill Cullen and Ron Baker. For more information about the City Men’s bowling visit www.clublithgow.com.au.
