The woman received a call on February 7 from a man with a heavy Indian accent who stated he worked for NAB, the woman’s bank.
He asked if she was the owner of a VISA card issued by NAB and recited the number of her card.
He said that there was an issue with the card and then proceeded to ask the woman a number of clarifying questions about her identity.
The woman was contacted by NAB after the bank was alerted to an internet transfer overdrawing the woman’s VISA card.
The scammer had used personal details shared by the woman to transfer the woman’s VISA card to another card over which he had complete control. He also created a third VISA card using the woman’s details.
Police said the scammer used internet transfers to move $5000 from the woman’s card to the card he created and then to the third card. He tried to transfer another amount of money to the created cards but this was declined due to insufficient funds, after which NAB contacted the victim.
The victim called Lithgow police about the scam on February 18. She told police the scammer had called her phone multiple times, after NAB issued her a new card, promising to return the $5000.
Sargent Darryl Goodwin said police were looking into the accounts and phone records of the victim to identify the scammer in cooperation with NAB.
“Be careful of fraud and scammers, especially if someone has called you. If you call the bank then they will ask identifying questions but if you get a call from someone don’t give out any details,” he said.
House party assault
The host of a party on Hartley Valley Road was assaulted by two men after he kicked out an intoxicated party guest early on Saturday morning.
Police were called to the party early at 12.30am on February 17. The host of the party told the officers that a short time after he had ejected an intoxicated person from the house, two men arrived and forced entry into the house by kicking the door in. He said they then punched the him in the face and drove away.
Police are investigating the incident. They believe the two men were friends of the party guest who was told to leave.
Trespassers at greyhound track
Two young people were caught trespassing on the Lithgow greyhound track on Friday night. One of the boys, aged 16, was found to be in possession of illicit drugs.
Police were alerted to the presence of trespassers and found two local boys exiting the track under the wire fencing on Inch Street at 11.40pm on February 16.
Police spoke to the two boys aged 16 and 14, both of whom appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
Police searched the boys and found a small resealable packet in the jumper of the 16-year-old boy. The packet contained four tablets. The boy told police the tablets were ‘ecstasy’.
The 16-year-old was unable to provide sufficient identification and was taken back to the police station, where his parents were called and took him home.
Sargent Darryl Goodwin said it was likely both boys would receive youth cautions for trespassing and the older boy for possession of drugs.
