In Lithgow, two drivers were charged for using phones while driving and nine were fined for not keeping left. In addition, there were 11 defect notices issued on heavy and light motor vehicles
“I was quite surprised by how low the mobile phone offences were, so obviously people are learning that lesson, but the not ‘keep left’ figures are quite disturbing,” Sergeant Glen Crawford said.
Sergeant Crawford said that Marrangaroo was the site of most of the ‘keep left’ offences.
Sergeant Crawford said that, when areas are sign-posted, and even when they weren’t, drivers should keep left because there was no reason not to.
“These are the types of things that cause havoc and road rage and end in accidents,” he said.
As Bathurst only had one or two not ‘keep left’ offences in the same period, Sargent Crawford said it was surprising that Lithgow was so much higher.
“It just goes to show we have a higher percentage and need to crack down on those offences,” he said.
The one day operation titled ‘Compliance One’ will be repeated throughout the year in an effort to change driver behaviour.
