Ron Bidwell was named Citizen of the Year and attended the ceremony with his daughters Michelle and Cassie to accept the award.
“When Ron arrived here 28 year ago, little did we know he would have such an impact on the place,” emcee John Kearns said.
He was quickly involved in projects to help Portland’s development. Mr Bidwell was a signwriter by trade and had a vision of using traditional signwriting to help revitalise the township of Portland.
Wallnuts was born and the group’s work continues, creating beautiful images around the streets and on walls of businesses.
The Young Citizen of the Year award was shared between Hayden Way and Alex Bretherton.
Hayden was congratulated for his “initiative” in creating the 7 for 7 for Simon appeal. In walking 7km from Cullen Bullen to Portland to remember his friend Simon Williams, he raised more than $13,000 for charity.
Alex was recognised as a hard worker for the local community and for his support for Portland.
There was a special cheer for Portland Post Office’s Yashik Vlabjee, who accepted his award for his commitment to the local community.
“Nothing is too much trouble and he will always help you out,” Mr Kearns said.
Community event of the year went to the Portland Business Association for its Christmas Festival, which was held for the first time in 2017.
The Mary O’Leary Craft Group was congratulated on reaching its 10 year milestone with an award for its wonderful work.
St Joseph’s School received an award recognising its cultural achievement in staging a musical in 2017.
There were also sports awards, recognising young achievers in swimming, Mia Dunleavy, Libby and Jorja Bailey and Tom Collins (who was absent).
