The two companies will equip 50 new knockdown rebuild homes in Victoria with 5.6 kilowatt solar panels and Tesla Powerwall 2 home battery packs as a standard inclusion.

Bradford Energy forecasts an average consumer energy saving of $2600 a year and the possibility of reaching 90 per cent energy self-sufficiency with the new battery installations.

"Porter Davis' knockdown rebuild homes equipped with Tesla technology will also see reductions in carbon emissions of up to 9500 kilograms per year," the company said in a statement.

If coupled with inverter technology, the battery packs can potentially feed energy back into the grid.

It comes as Victoria has been hit with record power prices as a series of 14 brown coal-fired power plant failures in the space of two months, combined with summer heatwaves, drive up energy costs and put the state's electricity grid under pressure.

A failure at Loy Yang B on Thursday last week set off a wholesale price rollercoaster, with electricity spot prices spiking from $86.72 a megawatt-hour at 3.30 pm to $1960.54 a megawatt-hour at 4 pm, rising to $5682 per megawatt-hour at 4.30 pm. The spot price then reached $12,931 a megawatt-hour at 5 pm, before sliding back to $5078.6 a megawatt hour by 6 pm. Prices eventually fell to $238.45 a megawatt hour by 6.30 pm.

"This partnership reflects the fact that Australia is in the midst of an energy transition and provides reassurance to homeowners that they can have the energy that they need, when they need it," Bradford Energy business manager Ashleigh O'Brien said.

"Solar and battery systems can help ensure Australians enjoy secure, reliable electricity supplies, even when the grid fails.

Ms O'Brien said Porter Davis is the latest of a number of home construction companies Bradford Energy has partnered with, but it is the first to include these solar and battery systems for free within the home package.

"It's like putting around $50,000 in your pocket," she told Fairfax Media.

"We're seeing a huge growth in the battery and solar panel market, there are huge prospects for these kinds of systems."

Porter Davis director Paul Wolff said the partnership was focused on future-proofing homes against rising power prices.

"With power prices reaching unprecedented levels, many homeowners are being forced to change their lifestyle to find cost savings, and in some cases even adapting to power outages," Mr Wolff said.
