The Portland St Vinnies will receive $4000 to install air conditioning for visitors and members alike in the Sister Mary O’Leary Centre.
Hosting community events is an important part of the service provided by the team at the St Vinnies however, the organisation’s hall is not air conditioned which means its members and guests become uncomfortable when the temperature soars.
The role the St Vincent De Paul Society plays in the Portland community cannot be underestimated,
- Mr Toole
“Vinnies do much more than run the local Op Shop. They host special functions such as morning tea for seniors on the first Tuesday of every month as well as hosting a local craft group which meets each Friday.
“However, in the height of summer the meeting room can become very uncomfortable, especially for a large group of elderly residents. The same could be said in winter when it’s quite a cold venue,” Mr Toole said.
Christine O’Mahony from Vinnies said they were hoping to get the air conditioning installed as soon as possible to make the most of the asset while the scorching summer weather was still around.
“We can get about 50 people into the hall and when you have that many people in the one place that’s when you need the air conditioning the most,” she said.
The CBP is a program which forms a partnership with the NSW Government and community organisations to develop projects which could not proceed without funding support.
The 2017 program provided $300,000 to support community based initiatives right across the Bathurst Electorate.
If you are a community based organisation with a project that will benefit your group and the wider community, visit the website at www.communitybuildingpartnership.nsw.gov.au to learn more about the program.
Applications for the 2018 program will be called for mid-2018.
