14-year-old Corey, who lives in Mt Victoria and plays for the Lithgow Lazer’s under 16s team jetted off for a 19-day basketball tour of Texas and California with other keen players from around Australia.
Since December 3 Corey has trained at the Mavericks Basketball Academy, competed against US school teams, seen an NBA and College game match, and visited Disneyland.
Corey’s father Michael said he signed Corey up to the tour after receiving an invitation from Basketball NSW.
“Corey lives for his basketball,” Mr Honey said.
“He absolutely loves it. He’s rung me everyday and he’s having a wonderful time.”
Corey hopes to one day return to the US to fulfill his goal of playing college basketball.
“His long-term plan is that he gets a basketball scholarship over there,” Mr Honey said.
“He knows it will be very hard work to do that, particularly because he is the shortest person in his team, but height doesn’t matter if you’ve got the skill.”
Corey Honey returns from the tour on Thursday, just in time for Christmas.
