A 28-year-old inmate of Lithgow Correctional Centre has been airlifted to hospital with multiple stab wounds after an alleged assault by another inmate.
NSW Ambulances said the man had sustained multiple stab wounds to the upper torso and throat and may also have fractured his ribs.
A spokeswoman from Corrective Services said the incident occurred at 11.15am on Tuesday.
“The inmate was found with non-life threatening stab wounds following an altercation with a 22-year-old inmate.”
She said the man was in a stable condition and had been airlifted to Westmead Hospital.
Another altercation between two different inmates occurred at the same time in the prison.
“About the same time, a 29-year-old inmate assaulted a 23-year-old inmate,” Corrective Services said.
“The 23-year-old sustained head injuries and was taken by ambulance to Nepean Hospital in a stable condition.”
Corrective Services confirmed the incidents occurred in the same area of the prison but would not say if they were related.
No staff were injured. Police and Corrective Services are investigating the two altercations.

NSW Ambulances said they attended to another man at the prison in his mid-twenties who has been transported by road to Nepean Hospital with a head injury.

NSW Police have confirmed there was a stabbing at the prison around noon on Tuesday, December 12.
A spokesperson for NSW Ambulances said ambulances were responding to a man with multiple stab wounds at a Great Western Highway address in Marrangaroo.
The spokesperson said a man believed to be 28 years of age is being treated at the scene for wounds to the upper torso and throat. He may also have fractured ribs.
“We are still on the scene with the patient, deciding whether to take the man to hospital by helicopter or road,” the spokesperson said.
He said there was a possible second patient.
“That’s all we have at this stage.”
