Youth minister Joshua Bleyerveen is preparing a spectacular night of carols, to be performed by the Academy Singers and lit by hundreds of candles along the wings and stage of the historic church.
“Carols are always great but sometimes they can be quite tacky. I guess we want to do something really special for the town,” Mr Bleyerveen said.
“We want to create that ‘wow’ moment. We are lucky that the setting of the church allows us to do that.”
Mr Bleyerveen said he will spend most of Sunday filling the church with hundreds of candles and decorating the space with bolts of hessian in order to create a unique atmosphere in which to celebrate Christmas.
“We’ll be celebrating the Christian Christmas values of peace, love, hope and joy but mainly we’re just trying to make something special. We’ll be inviting audience members to light a candle for their loved ones.”
“My hope is that it becomes an event that Lithgow does each year.”
Hoskins Church’s eight bells will be played during the evening and organist Gavin Tipping will accompany the carolers.
The Academy Singers are a chamber choir who rehearse in the Blue Mountains under the direction of Australian conductor and composer Paul Terracini.
The concert will begin at 8pm on Sunday, December 10, and go until 9.30pm. Admission is free.
