William Evans and William Neubeck were presented with the award at a dinner at Lithgow Workmen’s Club. Named for its founder, the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award is an international award and the highest recognition a Lions member can receive.
Lithgow Lions Club was founded in 1961 and threw its organisation efforts behind organising such events as the Festival of the Valley and a community rodeo in 1979-1980.
More recently the club was involved in the running of the hugely successful Gem Fest event and the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) events held at the Civic Ballroom, the most recent of which was held on Saturday night, November 18.
The 100th anniversary of International Lions marks 100 years since the first meeting, Mr Jones founded the club in the belief that ordinary people could use their talents to improve their communities.
Lions International now has 46,000 clubs, including 1200 in Australia, and more than 1.4 million members.
“This significant international milestone also coincides with free barbecues, special dinners and other community events, but in keeping with tradition, it is what’s going on behind-the-scenes that is worth noting,” Lions Australia national executive officer Rob Oerlemans said.
