Wrecksavers needed to win or tie the match with Charolais to seal outright fourth-place but could do neither, which allowed Spinners, who received points for the bye, to move into a tie for the final post-season spot.
Wrecksavers looked to be doing anything but playing for their season when they dropped the first four rubbers against Charolais all 2-0 and then the fifth 2-1 to trail 10-1. At the completion of the singles the match was out of reach with Charolais holding an unassailable 12-7 lead. Wrecksavers managed to win the two doubles 2-1 and 2-0 respectively to ultimately lose 13-11.
For Charolais, Sean Jenkins was the player of the night with a perfect 6-0 record. Pauline Wellfare (4-3) and Dave Mays (2-4) both contributed to the victory.
None of the Wrecksavers were able to end up in positive territory and they will need to turn their singles form around when they take on Spinners in a sudden-death play-off.
The Grippers-Loopers encounter was essentially a winner-takes-all affair with the victor to be crowned minor premiers and the loser likely to finish third. Grippers went out to lead of 4-1, 6-3 and 8-6. However, a 6-1 run from Loopers to finish the singles had them with the upper hand at 12-9 going into the doubles. Grippers took the first doubles 2-0 to reduce the deficit to a game at 12-11, leaving the last doubles to decide top spot. It was Loopers who emerged victorious, taking it 2-0 to seal a 14-11 win.
Michael Wood (5-2) shone the light for Loopers, followed by Kelly Gurney (4-3) and Linda Kappos (3-4).
For Grippers, Lou Kappos recorded 4-2 and Riza Wiradi got his money’s worth with 5-4, while Mark McAulay struggled to a 0-6 result.
Spinners lived to fight another day courtesy of the bye and will be favoured to beat Wrecksavers in their play-off.
Points: Loopers 42, Charolais 41, Grippers 40, Spinners 34, Wrecksavers 34. This week: Fourth-place play-off Spinners v Wrecksavers; major semi Loopers v Charolais; minor semi Grippers v play-off winner.
