The Spring Fair will take place at Kremer Park Showground, on the corner of Laurie and Lime streets, from 10am to 3pm on Saturday. It promises old favourites from previous years, including the ute muster, swap meet stalls, markets, a vintage vehicle display, street parade, petting zoo, the snake man and even a ferret race.
However, organiser Barbara Bretherton said visitors to the fair could expect some new additions this year.
“Yes, there will be more rides for the kids, we’ll have dodgem cars and bungee jumping, a jumping castle as well as a merry-go-round for the little ones,” she said.
“We also have a band coming from Mudgee, it’s called the Bush Rock Band and they will be playing all day.”
Ms Bretherton said that the ute muster would also include a “sound off”, where ute owners can put their engines’ grunt to the test.
The street parade will feature a steam engine from Oberon, as well as a float made by Portland Central School. The Swap Meet will allow fair-goers to swap and buy bric-a-brac, car parts and furniture.
The Wallnuts, artists and sign writers who contribute their time to creating the vintage murals Portland is known for, will also be adding to Portland’s eye-candy over the weekend.
Patrick Smith said the group of sign writers are working on a remake of the poster of the 1940 Australian war film ‘Forty Thousand Horseman’, which will be painted on the Crystal Theatre.
A mural of the the local bus ‘Miss Portland’ is also in the works.
There are over fifteen prizes for the ute muster and prizes for best restored, best original and best modified for trucks, cars, and bikes in the fair’s Show and Shine. All participating vehicles need to be at the showground at 10am, or 8.30am to be included in the parade.
Those wanting to enter their ferret into the ferret race may register from 10am.
