In the process they leapfrogged their opponents, Loopers and Spinners, on the points table.
Grippers were hoping to put an end to their sorry five-match losing streak when they took on a confident Spinners outfit. Things looked grim for Grippers when, despite winning the first rubber 2-0, they found themselves down 6-4 nearing the halfway mark.
Something clicked for Grippers from there though, and they won the last five singles rubbers as well as the only doubles for the loss of only three games to finally enjoy the sweet taste of victory again, 16-9.
Riza Wiradi led the turn-around for Grippers with a round-best 6-1. Mark McAulay (5-3) and Lou Kappos (3-4) gave good support.
None of the Spinners could break even, with Sharnie Roberts and Sean Jenkins both ending up with 3-5 and Leon Rust 2-4.
Former leaders Wrecksavers, having dropped their previous two matches, were hoping to get their season back on track when they faced off against the up-and-down Loopers.
Loopers took the opening rubber 2-1 but a six games to two burst from Wrecksavers saw them go in front 7-4. Loopers got back to 7-6 down but that would be as close as they could get. A 6-1 run from Wrecksavers put them out to 13-7 and they cruised home 16 games to 12.
All of the Wrecksavers finished in positive territory, with Peter Jaccoud best at 5-2, while Eric Joyce recorded 4-3 and Matt Kappos got his money’s worth to turn in 5-4.
Michael Wood (6-2) did his best to get his Loopers side close, while Kelly Gurney (2-6) had a big fall after last week’s 6-0, and Linda Kappos was below her best at 1-6.
Competition leaders Charolais increased their lead at the top courtesy of the bye.
Pointscore: Charolais 33, Wrecksavers 29, Grippers 27, Loopers 26, Spinners 26.
This week’s matches: Round 12 Wrecksavers v Grippers. Charolais v Spinners. Loopers bye.
