In just his second ever competition, the 29-year-old was pipped at the post by Western Australia’s Ryan Van Nellestyn in the Men's Physique Open Class 2.
According to a few of the experts, Picman was not far away from claiming first place.
“Other coaches thought it was pretty close and had it going my way,” Picman said.
“The competition was a lot harder down there but I think my physique was pretty good on the day but the posing let me down a little bit.”
“The way he (Van Nellestyn) was able to display a few of his shots… was a lot stronger than mine. He has had a fair bit of stage experience. He’s actually got his pro card in a different division.
“Obviously only being my second show, I can only get better.”
Have a look at Aaron Picman in action in the video below.
After taking the win at the NSW championships late last month, Picman said his early success has left him more hungry than ever.
“I feel great, I exceeded my expectations but the fact that you were so close makes you want to get that little bit more,” he said.
Picman spends at least an hour in the gym most days of the week and said he will be looking to make small changes to give him every chance of finishing on top.
“It’s something to aim for next year and I’m keener than ever to improve on those little things and hopefully I go one step further.”
Picman has his eyes set on the Sydney International Championships in April next year.
“I’m actually keener than ever, keener than what I was for the first comp now that I’ve got a bit of a taste for it and know that I can be competitive at that level.”
Fortunately for Picman, the responsibility of getting bronzed up was taken out of his hands after the trouble he had being “super white” at the NSW championships.
“New South Wales had an actual professional team that I was booked in for so I got it done all professionally.
“I didn’t panic so much about how I looked on stage with the tanning. There were no mess ups there.”
Picman thanked his friends and family for all their support, particularly those who made the trip down to Melbourne for the national titles.
