IT was in 1983 that James Warburton first experienced the thrill of watching the Bathurst 1000 unfold live at Mount Panorama.

The Holden Dealer Team entry of Peter Brock, Larry Perkins and John Harvey won that year, while the 1983 Great Race is also remembered for Dick Johnston crashing his Greens-Tuf Falcon during the ‘Hardies Heroes’ top 10 qualifying.

Just as Warburton marvelled at the action and the track itself as a child, the now Supercars chief executive officer still feels the magic of Bathurst all these years later.

“I think nothing stirs the emotion like the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, we see it each and every year,” Warburton said.

“It gets bigger and bigger, it creates more and more drama and it's such an incredible showcase for our sport and it's easily in the top few races in the world.

“We’re biased, it’s certainly the best touring car race on the planet.”

This year’s 1000 will start at 11.10am on October 8.
