The Lithgow District Chamber of Commerce will meet with Deputy Premier John Barilaro this week to discuss the future of Springvale Mine and Mt Piper Power Station, according to chamber president Angela O’Connor.

“We have been working closely with the local state member Paul Toole and we are doing that to provide certainty on what’s happening at Mt Piper and Springvale.”

Ms O’Connor said the chamber was concerned about how uncertainty surrounding the continued operation of the station and mine would impact business.
“I don’t think it has had any impact yet,” she said.
“There is a lot of media on the topic going back and forth so I thought I’d go direct to the source, I’ll just take it on myself.”
Ms O’Connor said the location and time of the meeting was not confirmed.
“The reason why were are going to John Barilaro, rather than directly to the premier, is that he is the Minister for Regional NSW, as well as small business, so his portfolio is directly relevant to businesses in the area.
“People are worried about the town closing down. I don’t think it will happen, I think we are in the perfect position for business. But Centennial and Mt Piper use local businesses, and Centennial Coal is a big supporter of the chamber. I think we just need some certainty. I don’t think he will give me the exact answer,” she said.
Last Thursday, Mr Toole said the state government would use its powers to intervene “if necessary” to keep Mt Piper Power Station and Springvale operational.
“I’d be happy if he [Barilaro] confirmed that and some certainty for businesses, just so people know it’s going to be OK for employees and families and it’s OK to have a business in town.”
Ms O’Connor, who owns property development company Ceedive, said that despite the uncertainty she believes Lithgow is an ideal commercial location.
“We have everything for a business to flourish: we have a council willing to help with development, we have amazing shops here already, we are on the train line. We are basically in the perfect position, an ultimate town.”
The chamber will host a business breakfast in conjunction with Lithgow City Council’s economic development officer and general manager on the state of local business on October 11.
