If you’ve heard a loud buzzing noise coming from Lithgow High School – it’s the Year 11 students. A new HSC subject has been introduced to the school teaching students how to responsibly fly drones, as well as use them for practical and creative tasks.

While the course is not assessed as part of the ATAR, it does give students a Certificate III and four HSC units under their belt.
“It’s nice and easy and gets you out into the workforce,” student Jared Fuller said.
“When I started the course I ended up buying a drone, I enjoy just flying it up and getting the views over town.”
Fitted with a camera, drones can be used across a variety of industries including farming, surveying, architectural engineering and film.
Zach Mitchell said he had plans for his piloting skills.
“Personally, I want to get into game development and the way I can use drones for that is 3D mapping. For example we can map the school area using a drone and and with a bit of extra work convert it into a map for a game.”
Instructor Paul Stanley said he had taught drone aviation in a variety of settings including food inspection and shark patrols.
“These high school graduates will be the ones coming up with new uses for drones in the future.”
