Politics or practicalities
COUNCILLOR Ray Thompson was right to raise concerns at Lithgow being overlooked when a new railway workshop was announced for Dubbo.

The same concerns are being aired on the street. Lithgow has a long history of rail maintenance – disrupted when the Carr government sold off the Loco Deport as part of a freight rail privatisation package but again thriving at the State Mine site.
It’s good luck to Dubbo but the decision appears to have been motivated by political expediency rather than practicalities.
Wasteful effort
THERE should have been caution bells ringing recently with the kerfuffle over a bid for a massive waste incinerator in western Sydney and the furore over across border dumping practices.
Some years ago the then Labor government proudly announced a toxic waste incinerator for Lithgow. That was dumped after open revolt in the community. Later our council was seriously tempted by the lure of royalties income to accept trainloads of Sydney garbage for disposal in old mine sites.
Once again there was a predictably hostile reaction and the grand plan moved to Goulburn. Don’t be surprised if the scheme for Lithgow is still lurking in the background.
Showplace
IF you haven’t dropped in on Lake Wallace for a while you’ll be suitable impressed next time around. Recent addition of lakeside seating to unwind and contemplate the world plus new explanatory signage has complemented the obviously dedicated work continually undertaken by council teams in maintaining this all important showplace.
Welcome addition
WHAT is certain to be significant new tourist attraction for the area has emerged at Hartley. Maple Springs Nursery has been around for quite awhile but Alan and Margaret Jackson have transformed the site into a full on Japanese garden full of visual delights. It will be open to the public for the first time in October.
What’s it about?
SOME things graduate from the bizarre to the absurd and this is the case with the mystery ‘work’ site along the eastern side of Lithgow Dimmeys.
It’s well and truly over a year, probably more like 18 months, since the fencing shut down the entire footpath but still no indication of any actual work. Whatever this strange standoff it’s not good enough in our CBD and long overdue for council to issue a statement on just what this is all about.
