However students at Lithgow TAFE relished the opportunity to present their plans for community engagement projects in front of Member for Bathurst Paul Toole and Lithgow councillor Maree Statham.

Bowenfels resident and TAFE student Manuel De Sousa admitted he was nervous ahead of his presentation but looked forward to showing the local politicians his group’s ideas.

Mr De Sousa’s group came up with a plan to create a local community centre that would be converted into a men’s refuge at night.

The community centre would act as a place where people of all ages could come to rest and relax and meet new faces.

“When the day is up, at about 4.30pm it becomes a men’s refuge,” Mr De Sousa said.

“There isn’t [a men’s refuge] for miles around, there is a women’s refuge but I think the men like those that are homeless need somewhere to go as well.”

He said the group project was a great chance to hear the views of others.

“I’ve gotten to know a few more people at TAFE and bounce a few more ideas off them.”

Councillor Statham said Lithgow TAFE should be commended for its community engagement initiative.

“Walking into the room this morning I was so delighted, I didn’t what to expect,” she said.

“To see so many young faces as well as older faces who have come and joined together as one to try and brainstorm their ideas and what they think is the future way forward.

“I think it’s amazing, I’m very excited about it.”
