The students travelled to the Taronga Western Plains Zoo to compete in the Western Region NAIDOC Debating Challenge on Thursday, August 10.
Lithgow High School’s team was made up of Alayah Lincoln from Year 9 as first speaker, Kate Francis from Year 11 as second speaker, Alannah Stoneley from Year 11 as third speaker, and Elektra McKenzie from Year 7 as fourth speaker.
The debating topic was ‘Indigenous languages should be a part our curriculum’.
Lithgow High School had the affirmative side and battled hard against Tottenham Central School.
By arguing that including indigenous languages in the curriculum as an elective would save an endangered language and promote inclusivity, the team won on points and became the Western Region NAIDOC Debating champions.
The team will compete in the State Final NAIDOC Debating Challenge on October 30.
