The safety improvements have been made possible by a federal government grant of just under $400,000 as part of the Australian Black Spot Program.
Lithgow City Council works manager Jonathon Edgecombe said the upgrades were also in response to concerns from residents.
"We've had significant representation from the community that the area is rather dangerous,” Mr Edgecombe said.
“It gets rather slippery particularly during the winter months. It's a perilous area to negotiate by car and we've paid attention to all of those requests... in order to improve the safety for all Lithgow residents."
The works will include resealing sections of the road with high friction asphalt, improvements to guard rails and widening the shoulders in a several areas.
Lithgow Council applied for the federal funding in the middle of last year and received the tick of approval on June 21 this year.
Council had identified Browns Gap Road as an accident prone area with eight serious incidents occurring between 2010-14. Five of those crashes involved heavy vehicles.
The crash data only included incidents which resulted in injury or fatality.
The eight incidents in question included three head on collisions and five instances where vehicles hit a barrier or embankment.
Just over $280,000 in savings from the Roads to Recovery program will also be transferred to the Browns Gap Road black spot program.
These funds will be used to improve other areas of Browns Gap Road which have not been funded by the federal government grant.
Mr Edgecombe said this should enable Lithgow Council to upgrade the whole ascent and descent of the Browns Gap hill.
The works manager said council would be endeavouring to complete the safety upgrades as soon as possible. At the latest the work would be finished by June 30, 2018.
"We're planning to have works commence as soon as the weather starts warming up,” he said.
“This will probably be in the earliest in November or December once we can get the contractors organised and write up the scope of works."
