Mayor of Lithgow Stephen Lesslie thanked Member for Bathurst Paul Toole for the state government’s contribution to the Lithgow area.
“This allocation is important because of the severe and specific difficulties that the Lithgow community has suffered since the downturn in power and local industries,” Cr Lesslie said.
The mayor invited all community groups and members to let Lithgow council know where they would like to see the money be spent.
However you better be quick with Lithgow council needing to submit all applications by August 9.
“We know we have a very short time frame but council commenced it’s grant application process on Monday night when I announced to the councillors and to the public that the Deputy Premier had made a similar announcement in regards to Orange council,” Cr Lesslie said.
Once council submits their choice of community projects, each of these applications will be assessed by the NSW government.
A survey of a cross-section of Lithgow residents will also be conducted to determine the community’s project priorities.
The selected projects will then be announced before the end of the year.
The state government have said they will give priority to projects that provide local jobs and support local businesses, a point Cr Lesslie was on board with.
“I’d like to see that some of the funding goes into works that in themselves create ongoing jobs,” he said.
“Whilst we can improve our infrastructure, there should be a long-term benefit after the infrastructure is built with employment opportunities.”
Community groups and individuals should submit their ideas to Lithgow City Council in writing at 180 Mort Street, Lithgow or council@lithgow.nsw.gov.au.
