On Wednesday 24 May, The Great Walk team presented Lithgow Hospital with a cheque for $10,000 then continued on their way to the Blue Mountains.
Now in its tenth year, The Great Walk is a 170 km Bathurst to Blaxland hike, undertaken to raise money for community organisations in the Central West, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury regions.
“We start at Bathurst and then the route is through Lithgow and Katoomba, so we like to do little donations along the away,” walker Jonathan Green said.
The walk takes the group five days to complete. As of Friday midday the team was making their way out of Katoomba.
Each member of the team of ten commits to raising $10,000 for the walk and they also collect donations along the way.
“We don’t have a fixed plan of who to donate to, we just see where there is a need,” Mr Green said.
“We often donate to children’s wards and this year we have donated community buses to Penrith and the Blue Mountains as well.
“By the time we get home we will probably have donated $1 million to different organisations.”
Former Penrith Panthers player Mark Geyer presented the cheque to Lithgow Hospital’s general manager, Jill Marjoram. Hospital staff also thanked the group
This year’s donation will be used to purchase a new BiliSoft phototherapy unit for treating newborn babies.
