“I lost my sister to brain cancer in August last year after a two and a half year battle with the disease,” Ms Dodson said.
“I wanted to raise awareness about the disease. Brain cancer is more prevalent than most people think and it doesn’t get the coverage of a lot of other types of cancer.”
According to the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation (CBCF) only two in 10 people survive with the disease for more than five years. Brain cancer kills more children than any other disease and more adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer.
Fortunately, Ms Dodson is not the only person affected by brain cancer seeking to reduce the devastating impact it has had on many Australian families.
Ex-NRL player Mark Hughes has been in remission for brain cancer since last year. The Mark Hughes Foundation raises money for research and patient support.
“I’ve accepted that it’s a journey and a path I’ve been given now, and with that an opportunity to turn something negative into something truly positive,” Mr Hughes explains on the foundation website.
Ms Dodson is hosting a ‘Beanie Ball’ to raise money for the Mark Hughes Foundation, which she hopes will one day be as well-known as the Mcgrath Foundation for breast cancer.
“I’ve never done anything like this before,” Ms Dodson said.
“My goal is to raise $10,000."
Ms Dodson has organised the ball for Friday, June 2, at the Lithgow Workies Showroom.
Guests will be asked to don a beanie with their formal wear. The person wearing the most creative beanie will be rewarded.
“I might have a few beanie changes throughout the night,” Ms Dodson said.
Special guest, Paul ‘Chief’ Harragon will be in attendance to host the night’s entertainment. Local musician Dave Webb will also perform.
The event is open to all ages. Tickets can be purchased from Lithgow Workies or on eventbrite.
