But over the Easter break, something different was stirring – dragons!
The forest was again the venue for the biggest competition on the national Venturer Scout calendar, the Dragon Skin.
More than 900 scouts and 500 officials arrived on Good Friday by chartered train and a fleet of coaches from Lithgow Buslines ferried them to the forest for a wide-ranging test of outdoor skills.
They faced the added challenge of what were officially the coldest April nights in the local area in years.
Contingents of scouts came from NSW, the ACT, Queensland and Victoria.
The winning teams were announced after hundreds of weary scouts were transported back to Lithgow yesterday.
Together with a huge turnout for the lapidary clubs’ Gemboree at the Showground and the usual hordes at Lake Lyell it was a busy Easter break in Lithgow.
