The girls were crowned Western Region opens champions after going through the day undefeated.

The boys played their best basketball of the competition to finish in third position.

Coach Timothy Lloyd said the girls played strongly as a team.

“There’s no standouts, it’s a real team effort and in any given match, any one of them can come through and have a really good game,” Mr Lloyd said.

After squeaking past Bathurst high in the first match 42-39, the girls then went on to dominate the competition.

“It was good to get a win against them (Bathurst) in a tight game and then a couple of really strong performances particularly against Dubbo who actually won Western Region last year,” said Mr Lloyd.

The achievement is particularly impressive as all but one of the girls are in the under 15 age group.

The team is predominantly made up of year 9 students, apart from one year 12 and one year 8 student.

“The younger ones all played in the under 15s comp last year and came fourth in the whole state,” Mr Lloyd said.

The girls team now moves on to play the runner up in the Riverina region in the last 16 of the state knockout.

This game will played at home next term.

At the conclusion of the competition in Bathurst, Kallan Phillips, Kyra Phillips, Geordie Goodwin and Meleke Jenkins were selected in the open girls Western Region representative team.

The girls Western Region team will travel to Goulburn to compete in the NSW state championship from May 16-18.

Trials for the boys Western Region team were held before the Bathurst tournament and saw Kobe Hunter, Hayden Cox and Mitchell Gurney selected in the squad.

The boys Western Region team will go to Wollongong to play in the NSW state championship from May 2-4.
