The start of school is a key moment in the life of every child – and every parent.
It’s fitting that we recognise such a milestone with a feature in your local paper, just as we have done for decades.
At the same time as these children are stepping into their schooling lives, hundreds more across the region have begun their Year 12 studies – the final year of their schooling.
What happens between these two milestones includes thousands of lessons, countless memories of good times and, probably, a few testing times as well.
That is the essence of life and it is the essence of education.
It is also the essence of opportunity, and that’s where the children in this district and others across our great region are more fortunate than some.
They are starting school in caring communities, at schools which are generally adequately resourced, with families which value education and those who deliver it in the classroom and the playground.
Our schools not only provide plenty of learning options for these young children, they will be the focal point for parents and carers.
Just as this kindergarten class of 2017 will make friends – some of which will endure right through school into adulthood – having school aged children introduces parents to a whole new circle of friends.
Together these parents will attend school concerts and plays, perhaps help at tuck shops and clothing pools and stand on the sidelines cheering as their children move on to school sports.
Good schools are one more thing which makes Lithgow an attractive option for young families. Whether the next generation in a family of Lithgow locals, or a family moving into town looking to make a new start, the school years are one of the most important periods in every person’s life.
These are the incredible first steps our tiny feet are taking. At the other end of their school journey they will be met by a very different world. It will be one that their parents cannot possibly imagine.
For this reason the training and the dedication of their teachers along the way will be so important. As will be the support for this profession to which we entrust our children for this journey.
