Work began on Monday to improve drainage and widen the shoulders of the road 3.5 kilometres north of Cullen Bullen.

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the work would ensure a safer journey for people who use the highway.

“The road surface will be removed and replaced, drainage will be upgraded, shoulders widened and new kerb and gutter installed,” Mr Toole said.

“This section of the road was identified for an upgrade due to its rough and deteriorating condition.

“Work will be completed in two stages, with stage one expected to be complete by mid-April, weather permitting.”

Roadworks are under way and take place between 7am and 6pm on weekdays and 7am and 4pm on Saturdays.

“Changed traffic conditions will be in place during work with one lane closed for the safety of workers and motorists and traffic alternating through the site,” Mr Toole said.

“Motorist should plan their trip, allow extra travel time and follow the direction of traffic control and all signs, including reduced speed limits.”

Stage two of the project is scheduled to begin in early-October and should be completed by the end of 2017, weather permitting, Mr Toole said.

“Up to date information, including any date changes will be displayed on electronic message signs along the road,” he said.

“Roads and Maritime thanks motorists for their patience while work is carried out.”
