The Wallerawang District Junior Baseball Association was recently successful in gaining sponsorship from the Springvale Lodge Charity Assistance (Springvale Colliery) for the purchase of much needed baseball safety equipment. The sponsorship totalling $1400.00 has allowed the WDJBA to purchase two portable foul ball nets for the junior playing fields at Lake Wallace from Bownet and Summit Sports Australia. Manufactured in the United States, the Bownets have been especially designed for the game of baseball as a portable safety system minimising the impact on players and spectators from foul balls. Until recently, Bownets were not available in Australia until in 2016 when Summit Sports Australia were able to import the one of a kind product into Australia. The nets are an important addition to the highly successful junior baseball competition and look great behind home plate.

2016 was a big year for junior baseball and softball in the Lithgow region with the commencement of the junior baseball competition at Lake Wallace after a hiatus of some twenty years, as well as the success of Cooerwull Public School’s softball team becoming PSSA Western Region runners-up after only two years in the competition. Many of the juniors that played in this highly successful side went on to represent PSSA Western Region in softball and also play in the Wallerawang District Junior Baseball competition for the Under 14’s sides the Hawks and the Geckos.
President of the WDJBA John Kearney has praised the efforts and commitment of the juniors in this opening year of competition saying that “many of the kids had never picked up a baseball bat before let alone understood how the game was played. Week after week we have been watching our juniors develop into confident skilled baseballers who can’t wait for next game day. As an association we couldn’t have asked for anything more”.
The Wallerawang District Junior Baseball competition for 2016-17 season is set to resume on Sunday February 5 at 9:30am at the Wallerawang Baseball Field, Lake Wallace Wallerawang with only eight rounds remaining of this highly successful competition.
