The incident occurred just after 4pm, with police, ambulance, and Fire and Rescue NSW personnel all flocking to the scene of the accident.
The accident happened when the first bus slowed down at an intersection and the following bus collided with the rear of the first bus.
At a rough count, up to 13 emergency vehicles were at the site at an initial count, with another six or seven arriving later.
There were 68 people on the buses, which were both 40 seat vehicles – 50 of them children – and a major emergency response has been activated involving officers from Lithgow general duties and Chifley Highway Patrol, NSW Ambulance Paramedics, Fire and Rescue NSW, and volunteers from Lithgow VRA.
A triage area has been established by NSW Ambulance Paramedics. At this time, police have been told the worst injuries appear to be related to bruising; however, three children (students) and one pregnant woman have already been taken to Lithgow Hospital for further assessment as a precautionary measure.
The remaining children are being taken to Lithgow Hospital to be checked as a precaution.
It’s believed those involved were from a school in St Marys on a school holiday excursion.
More ambulances were arriving to assess the other children as of 5.15pm.
The location made it somewhat difficult for the flow of vehicles at the scene.
A Lithgow Buslines vehicle was called in to transport the children from the scene.
